Martha Ann was born in the Milton area of Southend in 1834, the youngest child of Matthew, an agricultural labourer. There were 5 other children at the time and she was christened at St Mary, Prittlewell.
By 1841, the family was at Jail Farm in Barling, and in 1851, Martha aged 17 was a live-in servant to Farmer Bannister of Jail Farm. Three years later, she married Henry MANN, a gardener, at Rochford Wesleyan Chapel in 1858 aged 24 and nine children were born at regular intervals, all surviving to adulthood.
Martha and Henry lived first at Sutton near Rochford, then moved to Cockater Farm and finally Elim Cottage, both at Shoebury. Henry was a successful market gardener at Elim Cottage where they brought up their 9 children. There are photographs of her at Elim Cottage. Martha was still there with her unmarried children Walter, Rose and Eva when she died in 1921, 14 years after Henry.
Letters that she wrote to her daughter in Australia show that she was deeply religious, and hint that life was hard at times.
